The port has
particular skills in handling breakbulk and project cargoes.
Large/awkward loads are regularly handled at the North Mole for
delivery throughout the central South Island. Timaru's central
location on the east coast and excellent road/rail access with no
restrictive tunnels makes for easy handling of difficult consignments.
Bulk
Grain & Seeds
Ten silos,
totalling 19,500 tonnes grain capacity are linked to a 700t/hr
conveyor loading system serving No. 2 North Wharf. A weighbridge and
additional independent grain storage are available nearby.
Bulk Liquids
Independent
facilities exist for the storage & distribution of fuels,
Bitumen, molasses, bulk chemicals and vegetable oils. Timaru is also the major
South Island export port for bulk tallow.
Fish
Timaru is New
Zealand's second largest fishing port. There are two major processing
plants adjacent to the Fish Harbour.

5 hectares of
paved storage space at the North Mole Container Yard and Freight Station.

Covered Storage
A total of
10,000m² of covered storage space at the North Mole Transit

Land
The Port of
Timaru has 93 hectares of flat land adjacent to it, more than any
other New Zealand port. Of this, port operations occupy 17 hectares,
4 hectares are owner occupied, 18 hectares are leased or rented,
which with 30 hectares of common roading or access reserve leaves 24
hectares for either development or tenanting. Within this latter
category the port has 20 hectares of bare land available to third
party developers for storage, distribution or processing facilities.
Included in
the land available for commercial development are a number of prime
harbourside sites at Evans Bay with potential for the establishment
of adjacent deep water berths.
